The Pope’s Exorcist is now available on OTT

The Pope’s Exorcist, a supernatural horror film set to release in 2023, has expanded its availability to another OTT platform. Following its debut on Netflix, the movie, led by Russell Crowe, is now accessible on SonyLIV. Additionally, viewers have the option to rent The Pope’s Exorcist on ZEE5 for Rs. 99. Directed by Julius Avery, the film is based on the books An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992) by Father Gabriele Amorth, with the screenplay written by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Russell Crowe takes on the lead role of Amorth, with Franco Nero, Alex Essoe, and Daniel Zovatto rounding out the cast.

Father Gabriele Amorth’s authentic records as the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican serve as the foundation for The Pope’s Exorcist. The film chronicles Amorth’s investigation into a harrowing case of possession concerning a child, uncovering a conspiracy that the Vatican has worked tirelessly to keep hidden for centuries. During their trip to a historic Spanish convent, Julia Vasquez (Essoe), a mother from the United States, along with her daughter Amy (Laurel Marsden) and her son Henry (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney), come across a variety of fascinating people in The Pope’s Exorcist. Unintentionally, they call forth Asmodeus, an ancient demon who takes over Peter. The exorcism reveals both Amorth’s own flaws and the disturbing history of the Catholic Church.

The Pope’s Exorcist presents a chilling, humorous, intense, and curious twist on a timeless story skillfully brought to life through Crowe’s remarkable performance as the main character. Incorporating, historical elements related to the Spanish Inquisition in The Pope’s Exorcist adds credibility to the narrative. Despite having a production budget of approximately $18 million, the film exceeded expectations by grossing over $77 million, surprising both critics and viewers. Following its release on Netflix a few months later in 2023, the movie continued to thrive, dominating the streaming platform’s movie rankings for nine consecutive days.
