SunNXT has officially announced the release date for Lal Salaam on their OTT platform. The film, which features Superstar Rajinikanth in an extended cameo, will be available for streaming starting April 12. This coincides with the Tamil New Year celebrations. Additionally, viewers can also watch Lal Salaam on OTTplay Premium. The movie’s digital release was delayed, causing Rajinikanth’s fans to wonder about the reasons behind it. It is worth noting that, in line with current industry trends, new Tamil films typically become available on streaming platforms within four weeks of their initial theatrical release. This rule applies to even the most successful blockbusters at the box office.
For example, the movie Leo, starring Thalapathy Vijay, premiered on OTT platforms shortly after running in theaters for just over four weeks. Despite its success at the box office, films that receive mixed reviews and do not resonate with the general public tend to have shorter OTT release windows to protect their financial interests. However, Lal Salaam stood out as an anomaly. The movie debuted in theaters on February 9, and surprisingly, it stayed away from the world of streaming for a longer duration than anticipated despite receiving a combination of reviews and underwhelming box office results.
Lal Salaam, co-written and directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth and funded by Lyca Productions, marked her comeback to feature film direction after a significant break. With Rajinikanth prominently featured on the posters, there were high hopes for the film to succeed at the box office. Unfortunately, Lal Salaam did not meet commercial expectations and received mixed reviews, falling short of its potential at the box office.
Based on actual events, Lal Salaam showcased Rajinikanth’s strong support in enhancing the film’s overall appeal. Apart from portraying the character Mohideen Bhai in a significant cameo, he also contributed to the dialogues. Rajinikanth actively participated in the pre-release promotion of the movie. However, Lal Salaam did not resonate well with the audience. The soundtrack of the film was composed by the Oscar-winning AR Rahman. The storyline primarily focuses on two main characters, portrayed by Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth. It delves into the pertinent social issue of increasing intolerance and lack of trust among individuals of diverse religious backgrounds.
