Arbaaz Khan talks about OTT industry

Since India entered the OTT industry, the distinction between Indian and International content has become increasingly unclear. While Hollywood boasts Game of Thrones, India has Sacred Games. Arbaaz Khan, the producer of Patna Shuklla, mentioned that Indian OTT platforms have yet to reach the caliber of GoT or 24. He elaborated on the rationale behind his assertion. He noted that nowadays, numerous actors have transitioned from OTT platforms to become prominent figures in the film industry. Therefore, he believes that the distinction between OTT and cinema is becoming increasingly blurred.

Arbaaz further commented that although Indian OTT shows are growing in popularity, they still cannot compete with International ones. He emphasized, “The scale of OTT projects will increase significantly. OTT web shows are going to become massive. Just take a look at a series like Game Of Thrones or 24. These shows have been around for years and have achieved immense success. We are not even close to reaching that level yet.” Arbaaz elaborated on the matter: “Our most prominent films do not have a budget. Therefore, we will eventually reach that level, whether today or tomorrow, as we build an audience. Hence, OTT is undoubtedly going to become significant. There will emerge OTT stars and films that will resemble grand canvas productions. Consequently, I believe that OTT is here to stay.”

He highlighted the fact that just a few years ago, there was no possibility of releasing films on OTT platforms. However, nowadays, filmmakers can choose how they want to release their work. He expressed, “I believe that nowadays, it is easier to differentiate between movies suitable for theatrical release and those better suited for OTT platforms. In the past, this was not a consideration. Every film had to be shown in cinemas. But now, filmmakers can release certain films on OTT platforms, where they can still achieve the same level of viewership and success.” Arbaaz, in response to those who argue for the superiority of theatrical releases over OTT films, emphasized that he does not believe OTT will fade away. He stated that dismissing a film simply because it is released on OTT is unfair, as it does not diminish its value. Arbaaz believes that the decision to release a movie on OTT is based on the expectation of reaching a larger audience.
