In a surprising turn of events, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced a change in leadership just one day before the commencement of IPL 2024. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the 27-year-old batsman, was appointed as the new captain, taking over from the legendary MS Dhoni, who decided to step down as captain while continuing as a player.
Gaikwad revealed that Dhoni had given him hints about the captaincy switch last year. “Mahi bhai had just hinted about captaincy at some point of time,” Gaikwad told IPLT20.com. “Just hinted that, ‘be ready, it shouldn’t be a surprise to you’.”
The decision marks a significant moment in Gaikwad’s journey with CSK. Initially signed in 2019, he had to wait until the 2020 season for opportunities. However, he made a mark by opening the innings and smashing three fifties on the trot. Since then, he has been an integral part of the XI, winning the tournament twice and also clinching the Orange Cap in 2021.
“Feels great, I think two reasons,” Gaikwad said, reflecting on his journey. “First of all to be part of this wonderful franchise right from when my IPL journey started and then to be trusted by MS Dhoni for a leadership role obviously speaks a lot. The challenge lies ahead and I’m looking forward to it.”
Gaikwad’s first assignment as CSK’s full-time captain is the opening game of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), led by his former opening partner Faf du Plessis. “A lot to look forward to. It is one of the most exciting first-day games to look forward to,” Gaikwad said.
With the change in leadership, CSK fans are eager to see how Gaikwad leads the team in the upcoming season and whether he can continue the team’s winning legacy.
