IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack – Netflix updates the Disclaimer

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a web series that follows the longest hijack in Indian aviation history. The series’s story is set in 1999, where five hijackers/terrorists hijacked a passenger plane from Kathmandu to Delhi and tried to take it to Kabul, eventually landing it in Kandahar, a territory controlled by the Taliban. The series raised the anticipation among the viewers with its stellar starcast and promos. However, the series faced a setback as many criticized it for changing the names of hijackers to Hindus.

Monika Shergill, the content vice president of Netflix India, stated that the disclaimer has been updated and they have included the real and code names of the hijackers. Monika met with the Information and Broadcasting Secretary after the uproar from the netizens. She also added that the code names used in the series were used during the actual event as well. Netflix management also promised that it will review its future content so that it does not hurt national sentiments. According to the reports, Surjit Singh Yadav, a farmer and president of Hindu Sena, filed a PIL against the makers of web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack on September 2.

Created by Anubhav Sinha, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapoor, Kumud Mishra, Patralekhaa, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and Pooja Gor in crucial roles.
