Anubhav Sinha talks about the controversy around IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, the Netflix original, was released exactly a month ago. Surprisingly, more than the series’ result and the opinion of critics, the controversy around it gained more importance from the first day of its release. The series’ makers were criticized and slammed by a section of Indian OTT viewers. Many point out that the director of the series, Anubhav Sinha, deliberately portrayed the Hindu community in a negative light, which was not true. Director Anubhav Sinha spoke about his controversy in the latest media interaction.

Because of the public outrage on the series, the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry summoned Netflix India’s head, and the situation was brought to normalcy somehow. However, during this controversy, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack received a lot of negative publicity as netizens wanted the series to be banned from online streaming. The makers of the series were ordered to add a disclaimer as a precautionary measure by the central authorities. Anubhav Sinha called this entire fiasco “Gobar” (Cow Dung). He stated that he was confused during the controversy, as on one side there was a lot of love from audiences and on the other side there was crap. Anubhav added that he just did his job with absolute sincerity and hard work. He reiterated that all that remains is hard work, and the rest is up to the universe, as it is both destructive and constructive.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack tells the story of the 1999 hijacking that shook the nation. Five terrorists hijacked the Kathamndu to Delhi fllight and held over 180 passengers as hostages. In the show, it is shown that the hijackers call themselves with code names in front of the passengers, and that is where the controversy started as two of the terrorists/hijackers used the names of Shankar and Bhola, which did not go well with the viewers.
