Gangs of Godavari: Dismal response on OTT

Despite generating some initial buzz and achieving decent opening numbers at the box office, Vishwak Sen’s latest crime drama, Gangs of Godavari, was short-lived. The film’s momentum quickly dissipated due to negative word-of-mouth, and the announcement of its availability on Netflix two weeks after its theatrical release further impacted its box office performance. Some netizens felt the film would respond well after its digital release.

Many felt that the film’s storyline, with its potential to captivate viewers, was a strong point. Yet, unfortunately, the execution did not strike a chord with them. However, after its release on OTT platforms, Gangs of Godavari failed to ignite any significant buzz on social media. The performances, story, and screenplay, which could have been potential discussion points, seemed to have gone unnoticed by the OTT audience, leaving the film’s impact in question. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music for Gangs of Godavari, while Anith Madadi has handled the cinematography. According to reliable sources, there are plans for a sequel to the film, and Krishna Chaitanya has already prepared the second installment. Suryadevara Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya have financed the project, with Venkat Upputuri and Gopichand Innamuri as co-producers under the banners of Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas.

Director Krishna Chaitanya tried to make Gangs of Godavari like Dhanush’s popular film Dhoolpet, but his execution derailed the intent. The film’s story unfolds by moving from one significant event to another, capturing the extensive character development of the protagonist. While the development is impactful, it lacks depth. The emotional tension between Ratnam and Bujji fails to leave a lasting impression, and the conflict between Ratnam and his gang members is not adequately established. The execution is so straightforward that the audience never truly experiences his emotions or pain.
