The Telugu Desam Party in Telangana died a natural death with its decision not to contest the coming Assembly elections. Though Telangana TDP chief Kasani Jnaneswar and a few other leaders are in favour of contesting the elections, party chief N Chandrababu Naidu and general secretary Nara Lokesh have decided not to contest the elections.
The decision came as a rude shock to the Telangana TDP leaders. There are several pockets where the TDP is strong even today. There are considerable number of candidates for the party to contest the elections.
However, the TDP’s decision not to contest the elections comes as a rude shock to many of the leaders. The question is whom the TDP leadership wants to benefit by keeping out of the contest. Do they have any understanding with the Congress, or the BJP in Telangana is the big question.
Whatever is the unwritten agreement that the TDP top leadership had with any party, not contesting the election is suicidal. In politics there are no murders, we can only see suicides. This is one such a suicide by the TDP in Telangana.
The TDP top leadership is now busy mobilising public sympathy against the arrest of party chief N Chandrababu Naidu. Party general secretary Lokesh is now focusing more on generating sympathy with different programmes across the state.
He wants the TDP in Telangana too to have similar programmes condemning the arrest of Chandrababu Naidu rather than fighting the electoral battle. The party is also focusing more on the coming elections in Andhra Pradesh. The party wants to wrest power in the state by any means and generating sympathy is one such measure.
With all these issues, the TDP had committed suicide in Telangana by not contesting the elections. It is to be seen where would the TDP leaders go as the elections are fast approaching.
