While Marvel Studios has changed the title of the upcoming Avengers film from “The Kang Dynasty” to simply “Avengers 5”, new reports indicate that Kang the Conqueror will still play a major role in the movie’s story. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Kang will be paired with another villain rather than being the sole big bad.
This would seem to contradict earlier rumors that Marvel was moving away from the Kang character entirely following the legal issues surrounding actor Jonathan Majors, who portrayed variations of Kang in previous MCU projects. If Kang does remain involved, it likely means Marvel will recast the role with a new actor such as the previously rumored John David Washington or Colman Domingo.
The decision to include Kang but not make him the primary threat could allow Marvel to continue setting up the iconic comic book villain’s story, while also introducing a new overarching menace for the Avengers to face. Recasting such a major character is no easy task, but pairing Kang with another recognizable villain may help ease the transition for audiences.
