Android 15 Developer Preview: What’s New and What to Expect

Google has just released the first developer preview version of Android 15, offering a glimpse into the upcoming features and improvements in the new operating system. While this release is primarily aimed at developers and may not be suitable for daily use, it provides an exciting preview of what’s to come. Here’s a look at some of the key features and changes in Android 15:

Privacy Improvements: Android 15 introduces minor privacy improvements, including a new “Ads” menu under the “Privacy & security” section in settings. This menu allows users to see which apps are tracking their activity on their phone to show ads. Additionally, the FLEDGE API in Android 15 enables users to prevent apps from tracking them for personalized ads, enhancing privacy controls.

Partial Screen Recording: A new feature in Android 15 allows users to perform partial screen recording. This means you can now record only a specific part of an app instead of the entire screen. This feature is particularly useful for users who frequently record their phone screens or need to cast their screens during video calls.

Real-Time Camera Optimization for 3rd Party Apps: Android 15 includes improved camera optimization for third-party apps, particularly in low-light environments. Images captured in low-light will now be processed in real-time, providing a bright preview similar to the final image after tapping the shutter button. This improvement extends to third-party apps, enhancing the overall camera experience.

Pixel Device Compatibility: It’s important to note that the Android 15 Developer Preview is currently available only for the Pixel 6 series and newer Pixel devices. Unfortunately, this means that the Pixel 5 series is not eligible for the Android 15 update, marking the end of software support for these devices. Android 15 will be available for devices including the Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet.
