Android 15 Developer Preview 2 Introduces Satellite Connectivity and PDF Improvements

Google has released the second Developer Preview (DP2) of Android 15, following the initial preview last month. While this version is still not a public beta, which is expected to arrive in April, it offers developers an opportunity to test their apps against the upcoming OS.

A key feature introduced in Android 15 DP2 is support for satellite connectivity at the operating system level. This includes UI elements designed to ensure a consistent user experience across satellite connectivity, allowing apps to detect when a device is connected to a satellite for messaging and other services.

Improvements for PDF viewing have also been included, enabling apps to render password-protected PDFs, annotations, and offering faster and more resource-efficient local PDF viewing. The PDF renderer will be updated through Google Play system updates independently of Android version updates.

Other enhancements in DP2 include a more seamless and reliable NFC payment experience, improved automatic language switching for audio recognition, and the ability for apps to appear on the small cover screen of flip-style foldable devices. Additionally, there are new features like apps detecting when they are being recorded, support for a loudness standard to avoid inconsistencies in audio content, and enhanced customization options for the Do Not Disturb mode.
