The Sankranti Film Fest: Who’s in and Who’s Out?

Sankranti is the kind of season where every filmmaker believes it’s a festive time that can trigger profits at the box office, even with average content. The impact of achieving good numbers during this period is often double that of releases outside the festive season, despite facing competition. This belief drives both star-studded projects and smaller films to lock in their release dates. However, only a few succeed in securing their spots based on screen occupancy, with distribution rights playing a key role.

With still three months left until Sankranti 2025, the gamble over release dates has already begun. Initially, Chiranjeevi’s Vishwambhara, Ravi Teja’s untitled 75th film, and Venkatesh’s project with director Anil Ravipudi were announced during the movie launch. Now, two of the three films are stepping out of the race.

Ram Charan’s Game Changer will replace Chiranjeevi’s Vishwambhara, and Balakrishna’s untitled 109th project will take the place of Ravi Teja’s film, while Venkatesh’s project is confirmed for Sankranti 2025.

In addition to these releases, Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly, backed by Mythri Movie Makers, is also eyeing this competitive slot, and Sundeep Kishan’s Majaka is expected to join the fray. With the competition already becoming overcrowded, it’s still early to determine who has the upper hand. Watching which film will ultimately make it to the Sankranti release will be interesting.
