The Retirement Plan, featuring Nicolas Cage, can now be rented on Prime Video as it becomes available on OTT platforms. Tim Brown both directed and wrote this crime comedy-thriller, released in 2023. It also features Joel David Moore, Thalia Campbell, Ernie Hudson, Grace Byers, Ashley Greene, Jackie Earl Haley, Ron Perlman, and Lynn Whitfield in significant roles.
In the movie, Ashley reaches out to her estranged father, Matt (played by Nicholas Cage), as the only person to help her and her daughter, Sarah, when they get caught up in a dangerous criminal scheme. As they all get caught in a risky situation, Ashley discovers her father’s hidden past and realizes there is more to him than meets the eye. Ashley’s husband and his accomplice are using her as a getaway driver. Following her husband’s arrest, Ashley and her young daughter Sarah must turn to Matt, her estranged and widowed father, for support. Unable to afford plane tickets for both of them, Ashley sends Sarah to visit her grandfather alone. In the Cayman Islands, Sarah meets Matt, who is enjoying his retirement as a beach bum. After swiftly capturing Ashley, criminal lord Donnie discovers that the Cayman Islands contain the evidence he seeks. He sends his lieutenant Bobo and the “General” to find them and retrieve the important disc. Not everything goes as planned. Only Bobo manages to escape from Matt’s attack on the general. Sarah and Matt’s truck successfully avoids him. After Bobo informs Donny about the situation, Donny tells him to stay hidden until he arrives.
Matt’s hidden past is gradually unveiled to Ashley as their bond deepens. Seeking more information about Donny and his group, Matt reaches out to his contact, Drisdale. Through Drisdale, Matt learns that Donny is actually employed by a woman named Hector. After taking down some more of Donny’s men and reuniting with his friend Joseph, Matt discovers that Donny and his cronies are coming after him, Ashley, and Joseph. In a fierce confrontation, Matt successfully eliminates the threat. However, Ashley kills Bobo, leading to Donny’s capture of SarahMatt eliminates everyone except Hector and Donny in a daring raid on Hector’s stronghold and takes him to Hector’s ranch. In a daring raid on Hector’s stronghold, Matt eliminates everyone except Hector and Donny. Fitzsimmons shoots Hector, who then aims at Drisdale. Drisdale, after capturing Matt and shooting Hector, eventually discovers that Fitzsimmons was a traitor and eliminates Hector to cover his tracks. Upon Drisdale’s superior’s arrival, he reveals his plan to leverage the situation for his own political gain.
