The Indian theatrical industry experienced various fluctuations following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. An intriguing analysis has been conducted on the attendance of moviegoers in the domestic market, mainly focusing on the Telugu market. According to the data from 2024, India’s cinema audience has grown by 29% in the past year, reaching a staggering 157.4 million (15.7 crore) individuals.
This significant increase is encouraging for large-scale filmmakers in the Indian film industry. Turning our attention to the statistical figures for 2023, the Telugu market emerged as the leader, with an average of 9 movies watched per person, surpassing any other language audience. While the average number of movies Indians watch is 6, it jumps to 9 in the Telugu market, indicating a substantial rise. This report is based on a sample size of 8,500 individuals, encompassing urban and rural communities. The survey was conducted in January of this year.
On the Flip Side, the Telugu Film Industry had a few good days in 2024. Except for the Sankranthi Season, our top stars have released no big films. Additionally, the Summer period, considered one of the biggest seasons for movies, went with zero release of star films as the impact of the Andhra Pradesh Elections has forced makers to postpone the release of their films. Still, TFI is the frontrunner in the theatrical footfalls, and it is expected to gain a more substantial amount of impact in the latter half of 2024 with big films like Kalki 2898 AD, Devara, Pushpa 2, and Game Changer getting released.
