Sitaare Zamin Par: Can Aamir make a big comeback

Aamir Khan will star in the upcoming sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par, co-starring Genelia D’Souza. The film, helmed by R. S. Prasanna, has been in production discreetly and just wrapped up filming.

This is an authorized adaptation of the highly praised Spanish sports drama ‘Campeones’ (2018). The movie depicts the journey of a basketball coach who embraces the responsibility of guiding a group of mentally disabled children as a part of his community service. It is regarded as a spiritual successor to the beloved and timeless masterpiece Taare Zameen Par (2008). In the realm of Bollywood, the genre of a film has emerged as a pivotal factor in determining its success. While smaller, meticulously crafted films like ‘Munjya’ are achieving remarkable triumphs, high-budget ventures are stumbling if their genre fails to strike a chord with the viewers. The challenges of the sports drama genre, once a beloved genre, are now more apparent than ever, adding an intriguing layer to the narrative.

Recent films like Maidaan and Chandu Champion have struggled to recoup their substantial budgets despite their high quality. However, the latter is still running in the theaters and can make it if it has a good long run at the box office.. Now, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ is encountering similar obstacles. The sports drama genre may no longer have broad appeal. Furthermore, being a remake brings its own share of challenges. It has been nearly 8 years since an Aamir Khan film found success at the box office. His last movie, Laal Singh Chaddha, in 2022, was a disappointment, and his performance was heavily criticized. A good comeback is essential for him. It remains to be seen if the positive reputation and nostalgia associated with Taare Zameen Par will benefit Sitaare Zameen Par and deliver a much-needed hit for Aamir Khan.
