SIT submits report to DGP on post-poll violence in AP

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday submitted its report to the DGP. The DGP will forward the report to the election commission. The SIT was constituted following the directions of the election commission. The members of the SIT visited Macherla, Tadipatri, and Tirupati where the violent incidents took place after the elections. Some stray incidents were also reported on the day of polling on May 13. They visited the police stations concerned and verified with the records on the incidents. They also examined the CCTV footage during their visit.

The SIT members also interacted with the police officials in every police station. They also collected data from the people during their visit to these places. The SIT prepared a 150 pages report and submitted it to the DGP.The report found that the police remained spectators to the incidents. The rival groups collected sticks, iron rods and country bombs as the police turned blind eye. The report also found fault with the police for not taking preventive measures after the polling was done. Though there were some incidents on the day of the polling, the police did not take preventive steps to stop the violence.

The report also found fault with the police for not taking history criminals into custody during the polls and after. Those with the criminal record were left out and were allowed to move on the streets, the report said.Sources say that the SIT had sought more time to go into the details of the violence incidents. The SIT wanted to examine the incidents deeply and understand the reasons behind the incidents. It is to be seen whether the election commission would give time or would close the case with the report. It is to be seen if the election commission would take action against those responsible for the incidents and where the police officials failed to prevent the violence in the state after the polling.
