Audiences were left questioning why Prithviraj Sukumaran’s recent film, The Goat Life (Aadujeevitham), did not feature subtitles throughout its entire duration. Although the film has been dubbed in various languages to cater to viewers’ convenience, it is customary to include English subtitles to the original version, particularly for those who prefer watching movies in their original language but do not understand it.
Aadujeevitham had vernacular subtitles for certain Arabic dialogues, but they were limited and did not encompass the entire range. Given that a significant portion of the film is set in an Arabian desert, there is a substantial amount of spoken Arabic. The team deliberately translated only the most crucial dialogues for the audience’s understanding. However, the lack of English subtitles was due to a technical issue, which Prithviraj has assured will be resolved by Friday at the latest. Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Blessy, is an adaptation of Benyamin’s novel. The film narrates the harrowing tale of Najeeb Muhammed, a migrant laborer who falls victim to deceit and is forced into slavery. He is abandoned at a masra, where he is tasked with caring for a vast herd of sheep and camels. Throughout his grueling three-and-a-half-year ordeal, Najeeb is deprived of basic human necessities such as sustenance, water, clothing, and adequate shelter. Eventually, he orchestrates a daring escape across the treacherous desert, accompanied by a few loyal companions.
The movie depicts an extraordinary tale of survival and features Jimmy Jean Louis, Robin Das, Gokul RK, Amala Paul, Shobha Mohan, Nazer Karutheni, and others. Since its premiere on March 28, the film has garnered highly positive feedback, with many praising it as Prithviraj’s finest work to date – one that could earn him a National or State Award. Aadujeevitham, which boasts an AR Rahman soundtrack, is being touted by online users as a potential Oscar contender. Disney+ Hotstar has reportedly acquired post-theatrical streaming rights, and there are speculations that it may become available on various platforms in the future.
