In a remarkably candid interview, director Patty Jenkins opened up about the future of Wonder Woman in the newly rebooted DCU under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Speaking on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins revealed they are “not interested” in continuing the iconic superhero’s storyline “for the time being” and that her run is “easily forever” over.
However, Jenkins acknowledged her original inspiration came not from Wonder Woman, but Superman: The Movie in 1978. She emotionally recalled how the superhero’s story of persevering through loss profoundly impacted her after her own father’s passing. “Superman changed my life…I thought I was Superman; I could be Superman. I could find love; I could go on,” Jenkins reflected.
While the DCU moves on from her celebrated Wonder Woman films for now, Jenkins seems at peace as she turns her focus to the Star Wars universe with the Rogue Squadron project back in active development. Her lasting impact bringing the iconic heroine to the big screen in a definitive way is already cemented.
