Sunrisers Hyderabad is gearing up for the upcoming season of the IPL with a significant change in leadership. Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins has been appointed as the new captain, taking over from Aiden Markram. This decision comes after SRH finished at the bottom of the table in the last season, prompting the franchise to seek a fresh direction.
Cummins, who was acquired for a substantial sum of INR 20.50 Cr in the auction, was widely tipped to lead the team. His impressive leadership skills, demonstrated during his tenure as captain of the Australian national team, played a pivotal role in securing the role. Additionally, the appointment is bolstered by the relationship between Cummins and SRH’s new head coach, Daniel Vettori, who works closely with the bowler in the Australian setup.
Despite Markram’s successful captaincy with sister franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20, SRH’s disappointing performance in the previous IPL season led to the change in leadership. Cummins, known for his strategic acumen and on-field prowess, will bring a fresh perspective to the team.
This will be Cummins’ first stint as captain in the IPL, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders. While his bowling performances were not exceptional during his time with KKR, Cummins made headlines with his batting, smashing a 14-ball fifty, the fastest in IPL history at that time. His leadership credentials were further validated by Australia’s recent successes, including winning the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup.
Cummins’ appointment adds a new dimension to SRH’s squad, promising an exciting season ahead. As fans eagerly anticipate his leadership debut in the IPL, all eyes will be on how Cummins steers the team towards success in the upcoming tournament.
