In a remarkable feat, Apple has significantly ramped up its iPhone production in India, with one in every seven iPhones now being made in the South Asian country. During the last fiscal year, Apple assembled a staggering $14 billion worth of iPhones in India, doubling the previous period’s output.
This shift marks a strategic move by Apple to reduce its dependency on China, amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China. The tech giant has been proactive in diversifying its manufacturing footprint, and India has emerged as a compelling alternative.
Leading the charge in India are tech giants like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Group’s recent acquisition, Wistron. Foxconn alone has assembled nearly 67% of the total iPhones made in the country, with Pegatron contributing an additional 17% during the 12-month period ending in March 2024.
The growth in iPhone manufacturing in India has had a significant impact on the local economy, creating an estimated 150,000 direct jobs. This achievement is a testament to India’s growing technological prowess and its ability to attract global tech giants.
Looking ahead, the upcoming iPhone SE model, scheduled for release in 2025, is set to feature an OLED screen borrowed from the iPhone 14 lineup, further enhancing the user experience for Indian consumers.
