Netflix Documentary: Rajamouli addresses the Baahubali Controversy

In a recent interview for a Netflix documentary, director SS Rajamouli discussed the controversy related to a particular scene in his acclaimed film Baahubali: The Beginning. In this scene, the protagonist Sivudu, portrayed by Prabhas, takes off Avantika’s clothes and gives her a new appearance.

Numerous viewers and critics have expressed disapproval of this particular scene, labeling it as the “Rape of Avantika” and accusing Rajamouli of depicting non-consensual behavior. However, in the documentary, Rajamouli explained the scene. He stated, “Avantika is a warrior, but she does not aspire to be one. She desires to be a beautiful woman.” Rajamouli clarified that even when an arrow injures Sivudu, his focus remains on Avantika’s appearance, illustrating her longing to embrace her femininity. Rajamouli acknowledged that some individuals were offended by the scene but believes they misinterpreted his intentions. He remarked, “Depicting women in a certain manner, despite the presence of powerful characters like Sivagami and Devasena, invites criticism; I think they criticize without understanding the context.” Rajamouli maintains that the scene was not intended to be perceived as an assault or exploitation.

The director’s remarks have sparked a renewed discussion regarding the scene. Some support Rajamouli’s creative vision, whereas others maintain that the scene was inappropriate and lacked sensitivity. As a prominent filmmaker in India, Rajamouli’s viewpoint undoubtedly sheds light on the intricacies of depicting gender dynamics in cinema. Nevertheless, ultimately, art should be appreciated for what it is—art.
