OTT viewers can enjoy Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, featuring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, this weekend. The romantic sports drama was released on Netflix at midnight on July 26, 2024. Nearly two months after its theatrical release, the film is now heading to the streaming platform. Critics had mixed opinions following the debut of the Sharan Sharma-directed film on May 31, 2024.
The film Mr. and Mrs. Mahi portrays the arranged marriage between Dr. Mahima and the former cricketer Mahendra. Their common nickname, Mahi, identifies them as Mr. and Mrs. Mahi, similar to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s nickname. Cricket quickly becomes a shared passion between them. Over time, Mr. Mahi, an unsuccessful cricketer, witnesses his wife hitting sixes with tennis balls and encourages her to chase her dream of becoming a cricketer. With her husband’s encouragement, Mrs. Mahi, a practicing doctor, courageously resigns from her job to pursue a cricket career. Mr. & Mrs. Mahi surpassed Fighter’s record for the highest advance ticket sales for a Hindi film in 2024 by achieving 2.5 lakh sales, taking advantage of the discounted prices offered on Cinema Lovers Day. The film grossed Rs. 7 crore on its opening day, marking the seventh-highest opening for a Hindi film that year. As of June 20, 2024, the film has accumulated a total of Rs. 51.40 crore, with Rs. 42.63 crore coming from India and Rs. 8.77 crore from other countries.
Sharma was asked about the idea behind Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, and he disclosed that they initially considered the fact that many Indian brides come from families that forbid them from working after marriage. This belief still exists. However, what if a bride marries into a family that encourages her to pursue her dreams? This was the inspiration for the film’s concept. As they continued to develop the script, they became more engrossed in these themes. The movie was the second collaboration between Rajkummar and Janhvi following the horror comedy Roohi.
