Mixed Reactions Greet Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sarfira’

Akshay Kumar’s latest film “Sarfira,” a remake of Suriya’s acclaimed “Soorarai Pottru,” directed by the same National Award-winning director Sudha Kongara, had a rocky start. The film initially struggled to generate buzz and faced multiple postponements before finally hitting the screens on July 12th. Despite the anticipation, the movie received a mixed response from audiences and critics alike.

Akshay Kumar, known for his prolific career with numerous back-to-back releases, leads the cast of “Sarfira.” This approach has drawn criticism, with some arguing that his frequent appearances may negatively impact box office performance. When questioned about this strategy, Akshay responded, “Is there any guarantee that the films will work if I slow down and do fewer films?” His recent projects, such as “Ram Setu,” “Mission Raniganj,” and “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan,” though underwhelming at the box office, have found success on OTT platforms, securing lucrative deals and extending their reach.

“Sarfira” opened to lukewarm bookings, but positive word of mouth and favorable reviews have started to draw more viewers. However, as a remake of a well-known film, it has struggled to show significant box office improvement. Nonetheless, many believe that the film has the potential to make a lasting impression in the long run, much like Akshay’s other recent releases that found success post-theatrical release.
