Meiyazhagan is a disaster in Kerala

Meiyazhagan, the latest Tamil drama featuring Karthi and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles, was released in theaters worldwide on September 27, 2024. The film received largely positive reviews, and it also had a few special premieres before the release, which received a good response. Though a section of audiences felt that the film was a bit lengthy, the film was able to achieve decent success at the box office. However, the film failed to perform well at the Kerala box office and ended up as a failure there.

Meiyazhagan has collected 42 crore gross in its first week at the worldwide box office. The film gathered good numbers, mostly from overseas, and did decent business in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The Telugu states the performance of the film was average, but the shocking thing is the film performed terribly in Kerala. Tamil films have a good market in Kerala, and particularly Meiyazhagan’s genre is also very much relatable to the Kerala audiences. So, there were good expectations from the film, but Meiyazhagan was able to collect 66 lakhs only in Kerala in the first week, and it is a disastrous number.

The interesting thing is, Meiyazhagan director Prem Kumar C’s earlier film, 96, was a super hit at the box office. 96 gathred 8 crore gross in Kerala, and the number was more than the star heroes’ films during that time. Meiyazhagan was released in Telugu as Sathyam Sundaram a day later from the original release date, on September 28, 2024.
