Renowned songwriter and poet Gulzar is set to receive the prestigious Jnanpith Award. In a video message, Gulzar conveyed his heartfelt thanks to his supporters.
He said, “I would like to thank all those people who chose me for the Jnanpith Award and also those people who listen to my poetry and Shayari in the Urdu language.” He stated, “I have been contemplating that perhaps the influence of film and music has caused people to overlook the beauty of poetry and Shayari. However, upon the announcement of the Jnanpith Award, I realized that people still have a genuine interest in listening to Urdu poetry and Shayari. This realization brought immense joy to me.”
The 58th Jnanpith Award for the year 2023 has been conferred upon Swami Rambhadracharya for Sanskrit and Shri Gulzar for Urdu by the selection committee. Gulzar, whose real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra, is a renowned lyricist who has composed numerous unforgettable songs in Hindi cinema. His journey as a lyricist began with the movie Kabuliwala, featuring Balraj Sahni in the lead role.
He is the creative force behind numerous songs and scripts in various films and the director of several highly acclaimed feature films such as Maachis, Aandhi, Mausam, Khushboo, Parichay, and Koshish. His accolades include the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and at least five National Film Awards for his exceptional work. The Jnanpith Award, established in 1961 by Bharatiya Jnanpith, is considered one of the most prestigious awards for Indian literature, alongside the Sahitya Akademi Awards.
