The England cricket team has suffered a setback ahead of the second Test match against India starting on February 2nd in Visakhapatnam. A key spinner has been ruled out due to a knee injury sustained while fielding on day one of the first Test in Hyderabad.
The injured player is experienced left-arm spinner Jack Leach. The 32-year-old Leach exacerbated the knee issue on day two but still bowled 10 gritty overs in India’s second innings, picking up a crucial wicket. He had to skip Wednesday’s training session due to soreness, putting his participation in doubt.
Skipper Ben Stokes confirmed that Leach is unavailable for selection in the second Test, though he will hopefully not miss more matches later in the series.
Leach’s absence is a big blow for England’s bowling plans on what are sure to be spin-friendly pitches. With 20-year-old Somerset teammate Shoaib Bashir having missed the first Test due to visa issues, the spin department will be vastly inexperienced.
Left-arm orthodox spinner Tom Hartley made a dream debut, taking 7-62 in India’s second innings collapse. Hartley and off-spinner Will Jacks, who also impressed on debut, will now shoulder more responsibility. Bashir’s visa problem has now been resolved, putting him in contention to make his international debut as Leach’s replacement.
Leach’s injury could hardly have come at a worse time with England 1-0 up after their sensational 28 run victory in Hyderabad. They will hope Leach recovers in time for the remaining Tests as they eye a historic series win in India.
