“Indian” (Tamil), also known as “Bharateeyudu” in Telugu, stars Kamal Haasan under the direction of Shankar. The original film, released in 1996, brought fame and success to the director. However, the franchise is now giving him headaches, especially after the reception of “Indian 2.”
“Indian 2” serves as a prime example of how challenging it can be to revisit a classic after so many years. Initially, the filmmakers had no plans to create a sequel in 1996. Touching this classic after 18 years was arguably the biggest mistake for the franchise, despite it being helmed by the same director. Audience perceptions and expectations have changed significantly over time, and we are living in an era where these changes occur rapidly. Unfortunately, “Indian 2” failed to meet those expectations.
The sequel has caused trouble for investors and its streaming partner, Netflix, due to its high pre-release deal. Given the mixed reception and the impact on its streaming partner, the makers are now considering “Indian 3,” which has already completed the majority of its filming, even before the release of “Indian 2.” Reports strongly suggest that “Indian 3” will likely make its debut on OTT rather than in theaters, although the release date remains unclear.
