Indian 2: Shankar tells the reason behind selecting Anirudh over AR Rahman

The highly anticipated sequel in the Indian series, Indian 2, is all set to premiere on July 12, 2024. The film, which marks the second collaboration between Kamal Haasan and director Shankar, has been generating a lot of buzz on social media, especially with its trailer and songs. Anirudh Ravichander, who has taken over as the music director for the second installment, has stirred up a mix of excitement and disappointment among film enthusiasts and moviegoers, replacing the original composer, AR Rahman.

Nevertheless, this innovative decision has yet to be well received by movie enthusiasts accustomed to the Indian first part’s legendary music. Anirudh Ravichander’s compositions faced harsh criticism from Tamil music aficionados, who believe that AR Rahman should have remained part of the group. Director Shankar addressed the criticisms of the music score for the film Indian 2 during a press meet in Chennai. He explained that he decided to replace AR Rahman with Anirudh Ravichander because Rahman was occupied with the background score for their previous film, 2.0. Shankar also revealed that Kamal Haasan agreed to begin shooting for Indian 2 in February 2018, despite his busy schedule with the post-production of the Rajinikanth starrer.

AR Rahman, the composer of the music for 2.0, was occupied with the film’s background scoring. Due to the demanding nature of this task, the Academy Award winner was unable to join the team for Indian 2. Consequently, the producers opted to bring in Anirudh Ravichander, a highly skilled young musician in the Tamil film industry, to create songs and original scores for the Kamal Haasan film. Nevertheless, the production of the Indian sequel was postponed and commenced in 2020. AR Rahman’s musical score for Indian, the 1996 film featuring Kamal Haasan, is often hailed as one of the most iconic music albums ever produced in Tamil cinema. The Oscar-winning composer created five unique songs and the famous Indian theme music for the movie, as well as an original score that remains unparalleled. Audiences can now enjoy the Shankar-directed film on popular OTT platforms like Aha Tamil, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar.
