Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, announced that it would open-source its ChatGPT challenger, “Grok,” this week. This move comes shortly after Musk sued OpenAI, a company he co-founded, for deviating from its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.
Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding the use of technology for profit by big tech companies like Google. He filed a lawsuit against OpenAI earlier this month, claiming that the company had abandoned its non-profit roots.
In response to the lawsuit, OpenAI publicized emails showing that Musk had supported a plan to create a for-profit entity and had wanted a merger with Tesla to create a “cash cow.”
In a post on his social media platform, X, Musk announced the decision to open-source Grok, stating, “This week, @xAI will open source Grok.” This move will allow the public to experiment with the code behind Grok, aligning xAI with other firms like Meta and Mistral, which have open-sourced their AI models.
While the open-sourcing of technology can accelerate innovation, some experts have raised concerns about the potential misuse of open-source AI models by malicious actors.
Musk has been a vocal advocate for the responsible development of AI. He has called for the establishment of a “third-party referee” to oversee firms developing AI and raise alarms if there are any concerns.
xAI was launched by Musk last year with the goal of creating a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” Grok, the AI chatbot, was rolled out for Premium+ subscribers of X in December.
This move by Musk to open-source Grok underscores his commitment to promoting transparency and responsible AI development in the industry.
