Dave Bautista Talks MCU Future: Open to ‘Deeper’ Role

Dave Bautista, known for his role as Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently reiterated that his time as the character is over but expressed openness to returning to the MCU or DC Universe in a different, more substantial role. In an interview with Gizmodo, Bautista stated that he “would answer the phone” if Marvel or DC called, but emphasized that the role would need to be interesting enough for him to consider.

“No, no. When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax. I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe—the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it. I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role. Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like an ominous villain in the superhero universe. Yeah. But never. I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over.”

Bautista last appeared as Drax in 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which serves as a conclusion for this iteration of the team. Having spoken about his respect for the craft and desire to grow as an actor, Bautista is now seeking more challenging roles, should he return to comic book movies.

Dave Bautista will next be seen in the sci-fi epic sequel, Dune 2, returning to the desert planet Arrakis. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen on a path of revenge against those who destroyed his family. The sequel boasts a stellar cast, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and several new additions like Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken.

With Bautista’s willingness to explore new roles in the superhero universe, fans can only speculate on who he might portray if he decides to return to the MCU or join the DCU.
