Creature Commandos: The Start of DC’s Reboot

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently provided an update on the release of “Creature Commandos,” which is set to kick off the new reboot of the DC Universe. While “Superman: Legacy” in July 2025 was previously dubbed the “true beginning” of the new world, “Creature Commandos” will actually be the first release.

The animated Max TV show, with all seven episodes written by Gunn, will introduce a new lineup of monstrous characters played by a star-studded cast, serving as a spin-off to 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.”

The Start of DC's Reboot

Gunn confirmed on Threads that “Creature Commandos” will premiere on Max in late 2024, clarifying that there have been no delays despite previous listings suggesting a 2025 release. The completion of the writing and voiceover stages before the writers’ strike ensured that the show’s production was not impacted.

The late 2024 premiere of “Creature Commandos” aligns well with the goal of distancing the new reboot from the DCEU’s previous projects and maintaining a steady release schedule for DCU projects. The gap between “Creature Commandos” and the next project, “Superman: Legacy,” in July 2025, allows for ample promotion of the reboot as a fresh start for the superhero universe.

Given the show’s monstrous theme, a premiere around the Halloween season in October seems thematically appropriate. Fans can likely expect the first trailer for “Creature Commandos” to debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July, making it a significant event for DC Studios as it prepares to showcase its new direction for the DC Universe.
