Cannes Film Festival: Payal Kapadia becomes the first Indian Woman to achieve this Honor

Payal Kapadia made history by winning the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the second-most prestigious award after the Palme d’Or. Just like Anasuya Sengupta, who previously won the Best Actress Award in the Un Certain Regard category, Payal became the first Indian to achieve this honor.

The film “All We Imagine As Night” showcases Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha as Malayali nurses in Mumbai. It premiered on May 23 and received an eight-minute standing ovation. The Indo-French production explores the story of Prabha (Kani Kusruti), who receives a surprising gift from her estranged husband. At the same time, her roommate Anu (Divya Prabha) spends time with her lover in a peaceful setting. Since its premiere, the team behind the film has garnered acclaim from various festival circles.

The film “All We Imagine As Night” has made history as the first Indian film to compete in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival since Shaji N Karun’s “Swaham (My Own)” 30 years ago. Payal’s film was up against 21 other films, including notable entries such as Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Kinds of Kindness,” Sean Baker’s “Anora,” Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megapolis,” Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” and more. It is worth mentioning that Sean Baker’s “Anora” was awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or this year. At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Indian actress Anusuya Sengupta received the Best Actress Award in the Un Certain Regard category for her outstanding performance in Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov’s “The Shameless.”
