Can Malayalam Cinema continue its golden run?

Malayalam cinema witnessed its most successful movie release season in history in February 2024. Following the triumphs of Abraham Ozler and Answeshippin Kandethum, the industry saw three consecutive blockbusters – Premalu, Bramayugam, and Manjummel Boys—the romantic drama. Premalu surpassed the 117 crore milestone at the box office, while Chidambaram’s directorial venture, Manjummel Boys, paved the way for the industry to enter the Rs. 200 crore club. The industry is gearing up for another significant release season in April 2024, with the consecutive releases of Varshangalkku Shesham, Aavesham, and Jai Ganesh.

April 2024 marks a significant period for the Malayalam film industry, with several highly anticipated films being released. These include Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Varshangalkku Shesham, featuring Pranav Mohanlal in the lead role, Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham, Unni Mukundan, and Ranjith Sankar’s Jai Ganesh, among others. Director Vineeth is venturing into a new genre with the upcoming period drama, while Jithu Madhavan’s film starring Fahadh is expected to be a crowd-pleaser. Unni and director Ranjith, on the other hand, are exploring a superhero theme in their project.

After Hridayam, Varshangalkku Shesham is the second collaboration between Vineeth Sreenivasan and Pranav Mohanlal onscreen. This film has generated a lot of anticipation and is considered one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. It is expected to perform exceptionally well in Kerala and other parts of India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where it is predominantly set in the 1970s Madras. This period drama pays tribute to cinema and its iconic stars, including MG Ramachandran. With its potential, it could become the second Malayalam film to cross the Rs. 200 crore mark, following the success of Manjummel Boys. Aavesham, claimed to be a spin-off of the highly successful movie Romancham, showcases Fahadh Faasil in an unprecedented role. Directed by Jithu Madhavan, the film revolves around the character Ranga, portrayed by the National Award-winning actor, who is a renowned gangster hailing from Karnataka. Judging from the initial teaser and songs, it is evident that the movie is crafted in a manner that resonates with the diverse Indian audience.

Ranjith Sankar and Unni Mukundan are gearing up to unveil their ambitious project Jai Ganesh, a mystery thriller infused with superhero elements. Unni’s proven track record with box office hits like Meppadiyan and Malikappuram has solidified his status as a reliable star in the film industry. With the actor’s strong connection to the general audience and the intriguing superhero theme, it is evident that the movie is poised for success.
