In a bid to bolster Test cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new incentive scheme for players involved in the longest format of the game. Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, revealed that the scheme aims to encourage and safeguard Test cricket, extending its benefits even to non-playing squad members.
Under the scheme, players featuring in over 50% of Test matches in a year will receive a Rs 30 lakh incentive, while non-playing members will get Rs 15 lakh per match. Those participating in 75% of Tests will be awarded Rs 45 lakh per game, with non-playing members receiving Rs 22.5 lakh. These incentives are additional to the existing Rs 15 lakh match fee for Test players.
The move has garnered praise from former England captain Kevin Pietersen, who commended Jay Shah for his efforts to protect Test cricket. However, India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, expressed regret over the necessity of such incentives, suggesting that Test cricket should be seen as a reward in itself rather than something requiring financial inducement.
Dravid emphasized the challenges and satisfaction that come with playing Test cricket, highlighting the importance of recognizing the format’s toughness and rewarding players for their dedication. He underscored the unique nature of Test cricket, urging that its value should not be measured solely by monetary incentives but by the passion and commitment it requires from players.
