The Malayalam film industry has always been known for producing innovative films with exceptional writing and high technical standards. Despite its relatively smaller size in terms of box office revenue, Malayalam films were not known to achieve significant success at the box office. However, by 2024, the landscape has completely transformed for Malayalam cinema, establishing itself as one of the top-performing film industries in the South and across India.
Since the beginning of 2024, Malayalam cinema has released Premalu, Manjummel Boys, and Aadujeevitham, all of which have grossed over Rs 100 crores at the box office. Manjummel Boys has surpassed Rs 200 crores, making it the first Malayalam film to achieve this milestone. Previously, it was common for a Malayalam film to reach Rs 100 crores and to exceed it. However, in 2024, Mallu cinema has seen three films cross the Rs 100 crore mark, with one even reaching Rs 200 crores. The consistent delivery of high-quality filmmaking is being duly recognized by audiences at the box office.
The expansion of opportunities abroad and the support from the Tamil market have greatly benefited the Malayalam film industry. For instance, the film Premalu earned nearly Rs 15 crore in gross revenue, making it the top-grossing Malayalam dubbed film in the Telugu states. This success indicates that Malayalam cinema may have transcended its status as a small-scale industry. However, to solidify this progress, it is crucial to consistently produce films that earn Rs 100 crore in gross revenue over a sustained period. There are some notable movies lined up in April month from Mollywood, like Aavesham, Jai Ganesha, and Varshangalkku Shesham, and the trade experts have piled up huge hopes for these films’ box office performance.
