2024 EID turns out to be a disastrous period for Bollywood

It is widely known that two fresh theatrical releases graced the Bollywood box office over the past weekend, namely Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan. These films feature A-list actors such as Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in BMCM and Ajay Devgan in Maidaan. The expectations around these films were huge in audiences and trade circles. However, both films performed poorly at the box office and are on their way to producing heavy losses for the makers.

Both films are expected to suffer losses of over Rs 100 crore each, which is quite alarming. The film BMCM managed to collect 40 crore net in its opening weekend, but it still needs to recover the massive investment of Rs 350 crore. Even if we consider the revenue from OTT and satellite rights, the film is still projected to face losses exceeding 100 crore.

There is also Maidaan, with a reported production cost of Rs 250 crore. It earned Rs 22 crore in its opening weekend. Similar to the previously mentioned movie, this Ajay Devgan starrer is expected to result in losses exceeding Rs 100 crore despite non-theatrical agreements. Bollywood has now released two films in one weekend, both projected to suffer losses of over Rs 100 crore each, significantly impacting the Bollywood industry.
