Hanooman the Indian answer to ChatGPT

India is making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), with recent developments highlighting the country’s growing capabilities in this domain. One such development is the unveiling of the ‘Hanooman’ series of AI models, backed by Reliance Industries Ltd and a consortium of top Indian engineering institutions.

The ‘Hanooman’ series is a collaboration between Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML) and the BharatGPT ecosystem, aiming to redefine the generative AI landscape, particularly in the Indic languages domain. These AI models can currently understand and respond in 11 Indian languages, with plans to expand to over 20 languages. Ranging from 1.5 billion to 40 billion parameters, the ‘Hanooman’ series packs serious multilingual muscle.

What sets the ‘Hanooman’ series apart is its multimodal AI capabilities. Apart from text, these models can generate speech, videos, and more in multiple Indian languages, making them highly versatile and suitable for various applications. One of the customized versions, VizzhyGPT, is specifically tailored for healthcare, utilizing extensive medical data for enhanced performance.

Behind this ambitious project is a collaboration between SML, Reliance’s tech arm, and the BharatGPT research group, comprising IIT Bombay and other elite Indian engineering institutes. The project also has backing from the government’s science department, highlighting the strategic importance of AI in India’s technological advancement.

The launch of the ‘Hanooman’ series is a significant step towards India’s ambition to become a major player in AI. It joins other homegrown AI models like Krutrim from Ola, SaravamAI’s OpenHathi, and IIT Madras’ Airavata model, further strengthening India’s AI ecosystem.

In conclusion, the ‘Hanooman’ series of AI models represents a significant leap for India in the AI domain. With its multilingual capabilities and specialized versions, ‘Hanooman’ is poised to revolutionize AI applications across industries, positioning India as a key player in the global AI landscape.
