Vijay’s Ghilli sets a New Record for Re-Release Films

The highly anticipated re-release of Ghilli has proven to be a huge success, achieving impressive box office numbers over the weekend. Ghilli’s re-release has set a new standard for re-releases, with an opening gross of nearly 8 Cr worldwide and Tamil Nadu alone collecting Rs 4.3 crores. Everyone expected the film to see some drop in its numbers as it registered phenomenal collections on Day 1.

On its second day, Ghilli surprisingly maintained its strong performance by grossing over 3 Cr. In just 2 days, the Tamil Nadu gross has exceeded 7.5 Cr, while the worldwide gross has reached around 12 Cr, setting a new record for a re-release. The numbers are awe-inspiring; surpassing double-digit gross in re-releases sets a new standard. Despite today being a working day, bookings remain strong. The return of Ghilli to theaters has brought great relief to the owners.

Ghilli, released in 2004 as an official remake of Mahesh Babu’s Okkadu from 2003, achieved great success in the Tamil film industry. Over time, it developed a dedicated fan base and became a cult favorite among audiences. Vijay’s performance as a young man confronting a notorious factionist within the backdrop of Kabaddi, along with Vidyasagar’s hit music, contributed to Ghilli’s immense popularity two decades ago.
