Vettaiyan’s story is about a police officer who takes the law into his own hands to punish criminals and is known as an encounter specialist. However, after a painful incident, he feels responsible and starts to re-investigate his own case. What unfortunate incident forces the officer to feel culpable? How does he be able to catch the real and big criminal who is behind many crimes? Answers to these questions follow the rest of the story.
Rajinikanth did justice to his role and tried his best to elevate the scenes to the next level. Dushara Vijayan makes her presence felt despite her character having less screen time. Fahadh Faasil provides a few fun moments, but after that, he goes sidelined and is limited to being a sidekick of Rajinikanth. Amitabh Bachchan’s character appears as crucial, but he just gets a few pleasant moments to his name and that’s it. Ritika Singh, Manju Warrior, Abhirami, Kishore, Rao Ramesh and others were just present.
Director TJ Gnanavel received a lot of acclaim for his previous film, Jai Bhim. He has taken another powerful storyline which deals with a big issue in society. He dedicated the initial twenty minutes to celebrate the stardom of Rajinikanth and entered the story thereafter. The first half’s narration is continuously slow, with some notable moments here and there. The interval episode gets intensified with an unexpected twist. The second half starts on a serious note and continues to be in the same mode, but it misses the required emotional connectivity.
The film’s main plot is significant these days. The director, TJ Gnanavel’s taking was good during a few parts in the first half and the interval episode. Also, the investigation scenes in the second half and a crucial action episode work well for the film. The climax too works correctly yet it is not great.
The film suffers from predictability at times. Though the director’s intention is honest, he missed the required strong narration for it. The investigation scenes involving Rajini, Ritika and Fahadh in the second half were good for a while, but they appear stretched and routine after a point. The attempt to balance the message and Rajini’s image did not come out as expected. Because his character was underdeveloped, neither the heroism nor the emotional trauma register a solid impact. The key twist during the pre climax failed to bring the needed effect and looked very dated.
