Theaters: Single Screens getting diminished in India

The theatrical experience is always regarded as a beautiful and heartwarming one for movie lovers in India. Especially, many audiences prefer single screens to watch the films, and over the years, those theaters have been the backbone of the film industry. However, audiences have been observing the rise of multiplexes in the last decade, and the trend has become much more preserving in recent years.

The recent inner surveys report that the number of multiplexes will surpass the count of single screens in the near future. According to the official stats, in 2009, 9710 single screens were present in India, and multiplexes were about 925. As said above, over the years the count of single screens decreased, and as of this year, out of 9208 screens in India, there are 4745 single screens and 4463 multiplexes. So this indicates that the multiplex count will soon overtake single screens.

In the last 14 years, nearly 5,000 single screens have been closed in India, which indicates that the business has been affected so badly. Reportedly, over 660 theaters will be closed by this year’s end. The multiplex cutlure was started and got strengthened in North India first, and then it came down to South as well. However, the Telugu states have the highest number of single screens, and as of now, overall, 66% of the single screens are present in South India.
