Shahid Kapoor, in a candid conversation on No Filter Neha, opened up about the challenges he faced at the beginning of his career in Bollywood and criticized the prevalent ‘camp culture’ in the industry, highlighting the difficulties faced by outsiders like himself. Born to actors Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, Shahid recounted the struggle of being an outsider trying to break into the industry, likening it to a school where outsiders are not readily accepted.
He emphasized that he does not subscribe to the ‘campy’ mindset and believes in creative collaboration without belittling others. Shahid recalled the initial struggles due to his distinctive Delhi accent and the mistreatment he faced as an outsider. He expressed his disdain for bullying and asserted that he would stand up to bullies now, a contrast to his lack of confidence as a newcomer.
Recalling his early days in Mumbai, Shahid shared the challenges of living in a rented house and trying to make friends in a new city. He credited his acceptance and friendship circle to his time at Shiamak Davar’s classes and college before making his acting debut in 2013 with Ishq Vishq Pyaar Vyaar.
Shahid also reflected on his decision to do fewer films in his two-decade-long career, attributing it to his outsider status and his father’s advice to let his work speak for itself, rather than relying on his family name. He emphasized the importance of hard work and perseverance in an industry that often favors insiders.
