Sarfira: Akshay Kumar’s Film locks its OTT Partner

Sarfira, featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, is set to hit theaters worldwide in just one more day. Sudha Kongara, the director of this upcoming drama, has the backing of production companies 2D Entertainment, Abundantia Entertainment, and Cape of Good Films. Alongside Akshay, Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas play supporting roles in the film. It has been revealed that Sarfira will be available for streaming after its theatrical release. Disney+ Hotstar has been announced as the OTT partner for this movie, which is a remake of Kongara’s 2020 Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. The original movie was inspired by G. R. Gopinath’s memoir Fly: A Deccan Odyssey and starred Suriya and Rawal.

Sarfira follows the journey of a man who, in the face of relentless opposition, remains unyielding in his mission to make affordable airline tickets a reality. This compelling story unfolds within the dynamic realms of aviation and startup sectors. The film’s commitment is to inspire ordinary individuals to dream big and strive for excellence, undeterred by external judgments. Despite the challenges to his business and the safety of his passengers, he persists in achieving his goal of establishing a budget airline, even in the face of ruthless competition from cunning, rival airline proprietors.

Initially, Sikhya Entertainment and 2D Entertainment had plans to co-produce the remake. However, 2D Entertainment decided to sell the rights to Abundantia Entertainment without informing the other two companies. Consequently, Sikhya Entertainment took the matter to the Madras High Court to recover their investment. By early September, Sikhya Entertainment decided to pull out of the project, closing the legal dispute. In an interview with New Indian Express, Kongara discussed the decision to release Sarfira theatrically while Soorarai Pottru premiered on Prime Video. The director expressed her excitement and satisfaction with Sarfira, which is a unique project. She emphasized that she never viewed it as a mere remake, despite the availability of Soorarai Pottru on an OTT platform. Kongara reminisced about the joy of watching the film in cinemas, highlighting the communal experience that sets it apart from streaming services.
