Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Creative Choices in Animal: Exploring Complexity with Abrar’s Character

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Sandeep Reddy Vanga shed light on the intriguing character dynamics in his latest film, Animal, particularly focusing on the antagonist, Abrar, portrayed by Bobby Deol. An unconventional decision was made to depict Abrar as a Muslim despite belonging to a Sikh family, and Vanga explained this choice by delving into the character’s personal trauma and quest for a new identity.

Sandeep shared his observation of people seeking solace in religion during moments of zero confidence, leading them to change their faith. In Abrar’s case, this transformation serves as a symbolic rebirth and a complete shift in identity. The director emphasized that the intention wasn’t to portray Muslims negatively but rather to explore the psychological impact of such conversions, adding complexity to the character.

Abrar’s silence, following the traumatic loss of his father in the film, sets the stage for a vengeful war against the protagonist, Ranvijay Singh (Ranbir Kapoor). The revelation of their familial connection adds an extra layer to the intense narrative. Notably, the film has faced criticism for a scene depicting marital rape involving Abrar, a choice defended by Bobby Deol as essential for showcasing the character’s dark depths.

Bobby Deol clarified that the controversial scenes were not intended for promotion but rather to swiftly establish the character’s disturbing nature. He acknowledged the discomfort these scenes may cause, mentioning even his mother couldn’t bear to watch them. Despite controversies, Animal has emerged as one of the year’s highest grossing films, featuring an ensemble cast including Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri. The movie explores the complexities of a strained father-son relationship against a compelling backdrop.
