Rishabh Pant’s highly anticipated return to competitive cricket during IPL 2024 is nearing, promising a thrilling comeback story. After surviving a potentially life-threatening car crash in December 2022, Pant spent all of 2023 in rehabilitation, missing major cricketing events, including India’s ODI World Cup at home.
Recently declared fit by the BCCI to play as both a batter and wicket-keeper, Pant expressed his excitement at rejoining the Delhi Capitals. Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast alongside cricket legends Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, Pant admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. He acknowledged the different atmosphere on the field compared to off it but expressed confidence in his ability to perform, stating, “Having fun each and every day, thinking positive.”
Pant’s return will be a significant boost for the Delhi Capitals, who had a disappointing 2023 season, finishing second from bottom in the points table. The team’s efficient outing at the auction this year, which saw the addition of players like Harry Brook and Tristan Stubbs (though Brook has since opted out due to personal reasons), has further bolstered Pant’s confidence in the squad assembled.
A successful IPL season could enhance Pant’s chances of rejoining the national team, especially with the T20 World Cup scheduled for June. However, Pant remains focused on the present, emphasizing the importance of keeping things simple in a complicated world. He highlighted the need to believe in oneself and play according to the situation, rather than being constrained by a predetermined style.
Reflecting on England’s approach to Test cricket under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, Pant suggested that India’s focus remains on playing to their strengths rather than getting caught up in the opposing team’s strategies. He offered insights into batting techniques for playing in Australia, emphasizing the importance of cutting the ball rather than punching it, particularly due to the nature of pitches in the country.
As England prepares for their Ashes campaign Down Under, Pant advised them to incorporate more pace in their bowling attack, citing the success of teams like India and the West Indies who have won series in Australia on the back of strong fast-bowling performances. Pant’s return to the IPL promises to be a captivating chapter in his cricketing journey, with fans eagerly awaiting his explosive gameplay on the field.
