Being a 90’s Kid I’ve always had a soft spot for Nagarjuna, I used to enjoy watching Nagarjuna’s films in theaters with my family, and I have tons of cherished memories from those days.
My admiration for Nagarjuna grew stronger with Manmadhudu, but it was Sivamani that truly shifted my fanhood towards him. Sivamani remains my all-time favorite film, and when Mass was released after Nenunnanu, which followed Sivamani, it became a perfect commercial package that fulfilled every fan’s wishes under the direction of Raghava Lawrence. Devi Sri Prasad’s energetic music gave me goosebumps, and Nagarjuna appeared vibrant and full of energy in every song on screen.
I’ve always believed that a strong antagonist makes the protagonist equally strong. With the right elevations, it creates the perfect commercial package for any actor. Lawrence ensured this in Mass by giving a stylish introduction to the antagonist right from the first shot, followed by a simple introduction for Nagarjuna, which then elevates him to peak status in the subsequent scenes. Rahul Dev’s portrayal of Seshu is undoubtedly one of the most memorable roles of his career.
Now, let’s talk about the film itself. What I loved the most were the high-intensity action sequences and slow-motion shots, accompanied by an energetic background score that elevated Nagarjuna:
In the very first scene when Nagarjuna enters his rented house, a few carefree youths in front of the apartments play carroms and tease him by tearing his shirt. Despite feeling rage within, he calmly resolves the situation by instantly changing into a new shirt. This scene is undoubtedly iconic.
Nagarjuna showcases different variations in his first intense fight sequence, where he starts by lecturing the spoiled youths and saving one of them. During the process, a goon attempts to hit him from behind, but Nagarjuna punches him without even looking back. The sequence is immediately followed by an engaging BGM from Devi Sri Prasad, elevating the scene even further. This entire fight sequence is a testament to the director’s next-level filmmaking.
The warning scene, where Nagarjuna (Mass) calls Rahul Dev (Seshu), is a highlight of the film. The first scene to damage the antagonist’s reputation is outside Vizag Beach, where Nagarjuna helps a pair of young lovers by demolishing Seshu’s gang in a car. Blood spills from the goons, and Nagarjuna stylishly walks away from the car after asking the lovers to take it.
After the intense first half, viewers might expect some dramatic backstory explaining why Nagarjuna’s character is so opposed to the antagonist. However, what unfolds is a casual love story that is simple and sweet, with the addition of an orphan’s mother sentiment and a soothing background score, which is one of the film’s major attractions. Who would have thought that a comedian character would play such a pivotal role in shaping the protagonist’s character? Sunil, as Aadi, does a terrific job, providing humor and emotion as Nagarjuna’s friend.
The last 30 minutes of the film bring back the energy that may have felt lacking in the second half, showcasing Nagarjuna’s character in an even more stylish and energetic manner.
One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Nagarjuna lights a cigar for Rahul Dev. What’s great about this scene? After a heavy face-off without knowing each other in the first half, these two finally meet at a function where Nagarjuna casually warns Rahul Dev before reuniting with his love interest, followed by the song “Natho Vasthava.”
The fight sequence in the climax, reminiscent of the antagonist’s introduction at the beginning, ends the film on a high note.
As for the music, Devi Sri Prasad’s high-energy beats are electrifying. Even the first song, with its festival theme, might seem a bit dull compared to the others, but the rest of the album takes things to the next level, setting the trend for a blockbuster soundtrack. My favorite songs from the album, in order, are:
I thoroughly enjoyed the re-release experience with fellow fans. Being the second re-release after Manmadhudu from Nagarjuna, a day before his birthday, brought in just the right vibe. Now, all eyes are on his upcoming projects and the eighth season of Bigg Boss Telugu. In advance, I wish a very Happy Birthday to my Demi-God, King Akkineni Nagarjuna!
