Manichitrathazhu remains a beloved classic among Malayalam film fans, with many considering it a top favorite. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1993 hit directed by Fazil. Audiences can look forward to a special screening of the famous psychological horror thriller on August 17, returning it to the big screen.
The movie featuring Mohanlal, Shobana, and Suresh Gopi remains a timeless classic in the annals of Malayalam cinema, captivating audiences with each viewing. After its resounding success in Kerala, the film was subsequently adapted into different languages such as Tamil, Kannada, and Bengali. Mohanlal’s Spadikam was re-released last year, and now his beloved movie, Devadoothan, is set to return to cinemas soon. The mystery thriller, starring Mohanlal, Jaya Prada, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayalakshmi, Murali, and Vineeth Kumar, will have its theatrical debut on July 26th. Devadoothan faced a disappointing reception at the box office in 2001. Nevertheless, the film received high praise from viewers after its television debut and DVD launch. Its popularity further increased among the younger audience after being uploaded on YouTube.
Manichitrathazu, a psychological horror thriller, was first shown in cinemas in 1993. The story revolves around Ganga, a young woman who assumes the identity of the centuries-old Tamil dancer Nagavalli. Mohanlal portrayed Dr. Sunny, who arrives at Madampalli Mansion to treat Shobana, the actress who played Ganga, and to uncover the mystery behind Nagavalli. Meanwhile, Suresh Gopi played Nakulan, Ganga’s devoted husband.
Several actors took on supporting roles, including Innocent, KPAC Lalitha, Nedumudi Venu, Thilakan, Kuthiravattam Pappu, Vinaya Prasad, Ganesh Kumar, Sudheesh, Rudra, Kuttyedathi Vilasini, and Sridhar. MG Radhakrishnan penned the songs, while Johnson composed the original score. Produced by the esteemed Swargachitra banner, the film was released in 1993. The movie’s soundtracks have also been highly esteemed across generations.
