The film kickstarts in an asylum where Arthur’s split personality is intriguingly tested. However, the first highlight comes when Joker and Harley Quinn interact for the very first time. Despite both characters’ mental illnesses, their troubled pasts mix with a romance that showcases a spark between them—serious yet with a hint of desire. Margot Robbie may have made Harley Quinn cute, but Lady Gaga deserves credit for her serious and mature performance, connecting with the character’s deeper personality.
Another standout moment is Joker’s interview before the trial, where he defines love through a song. The lyrics, matching the emotion, are top-class. Similarly, Harley Quinn shines when she explains her villainy through song lyrics outside the courtroom.
For me, the way the makers explored the romance between Joker and Harley Quinn truly stands out. Arthur didn’t care much for the live testimony; all he wanted was to see Lee in court, and that was his sole focus.
Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn delivers a memorable moment with her line: “From the hill, we build a mountain.”
On the negative side, the musical theme that shined early on loses its spark during the testimony scenes, which lacked the drama and intrigue they needed. The witness Gary’s statements revealed how poorly handled these moments were. Arthur’s self-representation also falls flat, making the climax a disappointing ride with little involvement from Harley Quinn.
Overall Verdict: The initial spark doesn’t carry through the entire film, but Joaquin Phoenix’s performance keeps us engaged even during dull scenes. Lady Gaga shines as Harley Quinn, but the climax ultimately disappoints.
