Indian 3 to be released on OTT? This question and rumor are doing the rounds in the Kollywood circles now. It is widely known that Indian 2, the Kamal Haasan and Shankar’s vigilante drama, was released in theaters worldwide this July. Being a sequel to a landmark film like Indian (1996), the film carried good pre-release hype, though its shooting was halted in between, and it also had a delayed theatrical release. Upon its theatrical release on July 12, 2024, Indian 2 received negative reviews from audiences and critics. Now, rather unexpected news about the film’s sequel, Indian 3, is being circulated on social media and media portals.
Indian 2 was able to collect around 150 crore gross at the worldwide box office and ended up as a massive failure at the box office. More than the box office result, the film was criticized for its silly and over-the-top nature/scenes. Many were disappointed with the way Shankar handled the iconic character of Senapathy and derailed the integrity of it. The makers attached a trailer of the sequel, Indian 3, at the end of Indian 2, which showed a glimpse of Veerasekharan Senapathy, the father of Indian Thatha (Senapthy). The latest reports suggest that the OTT giant, Netflix, is in talks with Lyca Productions, the banner behind the film, to skip the theatrical release of Indian 3 and release it directly on OTT. However, it cannot be confirmed until an official announcement regarding the same is made.
During the promotions of Indian 2, Kamal Haasan repeatedly stated that he agreed to do Indian 2 only because he liked Indian 3. Kajal Aggarwal’s character, which was supposed to be a part of Indian 2, was moved to Indian 3. Some netizens are stating that it is better for Indian 3 to be released on OTT as there will be less negative response, while some sections of social media want the film to be released in theaters. So, let us wait for the official confirmation from Shankar and Lyca Productions on Indian 3’s future.
