Indian 2 crosses a major landmark, but the struggle at the box office continues

Much awaited Sequel Indian 2 (Bharateeyudu 2 and Hindustani 2 in Telugu and Hindi, respectively) in the combination of Director Shankar and Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan was released in theaters amidst massive hype on July 12, 2024. The film opened to a terrible response as the audience and reviewers lashed at its poor, troll-worthy content. Indian 2 has crossed the 100 Cr mark at the worldwide box office, and it gathered over 110 Cr Gross in its three days of theatrical run.

The Telugu Version, Bharateeyudu 2, had a terrific opening, but it saw a significant drop on its second day. Hindustani 2 did not get many openings in the north, while Tamil Nadu contributed to the film’s total. The trade experts anticipate that Indian 2 might close its theatrical run with a gross of over 150 Crores. Many believe that the decision to split the Indian franchise into a trilogy led to the delay of the Kamal Haasan starrer for more than four years. Director Shankar’s creative choice resulted in Indian 2 becoming a lengthy and unengaging film, with illogical scenes attempting to turn Veerasekharan Senapathy into a superhero. Despite efforts to shorten the movie’s duration, the damage has already been done. Netizens also feel that the Indian film industry, particularly South cinema, has reached a saturation point with the trend of ‘forced sequels.’ While sequels can be successful with substantial content and focused writing, turning star-led films into franchises solely for financial gain risks diluting the overall cinematic experience.

Indian 2, directed by Shankar, features a star-studded cast including Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Kalidas Jayaram, Gulshan Grover, Nedumudi Venu, Vivek, Samuthirakani, Bobby Simha, Guru Somasundaram, Delhi Ganesh, Jayaprakash, Manobala, Vennela Kishore, and Deepa Shankar. Anirudh Ravichander has taken over music composition duties from AR Rahman for this sequel. Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies produce the film.
