Devara Screenplay Choice: A Curse or Boon?

NTR’s latest action drama, Devara, was released last week and created superb records at the box office for the first day and first weekend as well. While the film’s box office performance has been satisfactory, there were a few discussions regarding the film’s screenplay structure among audiences, movie lovers, and a few critics as well.

According to many audiences who have seen Devara, the film has a contrasting feel in both halves. While the first half carries a heavy emotional and action feel, the second half goes on a lighthearted note with again an emotional punch packed at the climax. The response for this narrative style by the makers of Devara did not get unanimous support, including the fans of Devara. Because everyone felt that the second half could not continue the same momentum as the first half, and some even said that they felt like they were watching a new movie all of a sudden. Surprisingly, it turns out that the team of Devara wanted to reverse the first and second half before the final editing.

In a recent interview, director Koratala Siva talked about the original plan of the team for Devara. Initially, the first half of Devara was planned to show the story of Vara and a flashback of Devara, followed by the action bang at the climax. However, Siva wanted not to have similarities with the other films, which used popular screenplay techniques like Baasha and Baahubali. So, he planned to show Devara’s story in the first half and Vara’s part in the second half. After listening to the words of Koraala Siva, many netizens stated that he could have gone with regular narration, which could have elevated the comic element of NTR, and also the love track between NTR and Janhvi could have looked more prominent.
